A quick and satisfying weeknight dinner featuring lean ground beef and sautéed vegetables in a savory sauce, all topped with melted cheese on a toasted roll. This easy recipe delivers all the classic Philly cheesesteak flavor with the convenience of ground beef.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10 or 93/7)
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces white or cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook for 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.
  2. Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Cook for 5 more minutes until browned. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Remove veggie mix to a plate.
  3. In the same pan, add remaining oil if needed. Crumble in ground beef. Cook undisturbed for 1 minute, then break up and cook until no pink remains.
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, smoked paprika, onion powder, and black pepper to the beef. Stir well and let sauces reduce slightly.
  5. Return the cooked veggies to the skillet with the beef. Stir to combine and heat through.
  6. Lay provolone cheese slices over the top of the beef and veggie mixture. Cover the pan and let sit for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted.
  7. While cheese melts, split and lightly toast the hoagie rolls under a broiler or in a toaster.
  8. Spoon the cheesy beef filling into the toasted rolls. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free rolls and tamari instead of soy sauce. The filling can be made ahead and stored for easy meals.
