A quick and savory weeknight dinner featuring ground beef simmered in a sweet, garlicky, and slightly spicy Korean-inspired sauce. Ready in just 20 minutes and served over rice for a comforting, family-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10)
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Cooked white rice, for serving
  • Steamed broccoli or shredded carrots, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up, until fully browned. Drain excess grease if desired.
  2. While beef cooks, whisk together brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and black pepper in a small bowl.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Pour the sauce over the cooked beef and stir to combine. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  4. Remove from heat. Stir in most of the green onions and sesame seeds, reserving some for garnish.
  5. Serve immediately over cooked rice, topped with reserved green onions and sesame seeds. Add steamed vegetables if desired.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use tamari. Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for the beef. Adjust red pepper flakes to control spiciness. Letting the sauce simmer is key for flavor and texture.
