Description
This Cheesy Texas Trash Dip is the ultimate party appetizer. Loaded with savory sausage, creamy cheeses, and a hint of spice from Rotel tomatoes, it’s always the first dish to disappear at gatherings. Perfect for game days, potlucks, or any casual get-together.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground breakfast sausage (mild or hot, based on your preference)
- 1 (8-ounce) block of cream cheese, softened
- 1 (16-ounce) container of sour cream
- 1 (10-ounce) can of Rotel tomatoes and green chilies, undrained
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 packet (1 ounce) taco seasoning
- 1 (4.5-ounce) can of chopped green chilies, undrained
- Optional garnishes: sliced green onions, chopped cilantro, diced jalapeños
Instructions
- Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground sausage until it’s browned and cooked through, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease.
- Combine Everything: In the bowl of your slow cooker OR a large mixing bowl (if using the oven method), add the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, sour cream, undrained Rotel, shredded cheddar, taco seasoning, and the can of green chilies.
- Slow Cooker Method: Stir all the ingredients in the slow cooker until well combined. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours, stirring once halfway through, until the dip is hot and bubbly.
- Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mixed dip to a 9×9-inch or similar sized baking dish. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the edges are bubbly and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve: Give the dip a final stir. Top with your chosen garnishes like green onions and serve immediately with sturdy tortilla chips, Fritos, or sliced baguette.
Notes
For the creamiest texture, make sure your cream cheese is truly softened to room temperature before mixing. This prevents little lumps of cold cream cheese in your final dip. The dip can be assembled a day in advance and cooked when ready to serve.
